Vuelta 2022 - World Tour objective: the UCI points race enters its home stretch

Play the sustain. This is jargon that cycling is unfamiliar with. However, in the World Tour this season, avoiding relegation is the concern of many teams, with the race for UCI points as their leitmotif. Objective: to ensure its place among the eighteen elite structures for the next three seasons. For this – and this is new – each team must have performed sufficiently well over the 2020-2022 period. The Vuelta (August 19-September 11), the last Grand Tour of the year, could therefore be decisive in this regard.

The allocation of World Tour licenses depends on five criteria: ethical, financial, administrative, organizational and sporting. Understand: you have to get into the nails, within the first four categories mentioned, then it’s the road that speaks. The UCI world ranking by teams, over a season, is obtained by adding together the points of the ten best riders in each formation. This classification extended to three exercises makes it possible to define the eighteen best cars of the peloton, intended to form the first division, if their file is sufficiently solid.

Lotto Soudal vs. Movistar?

guest of Bike Bistro this Monday, Guillaume Martin for example explained that the road race of the next World Championships (September 25) did not represent an objective for him, on the one hand because “the course is not necessarily the one that (him) best suits“, on the other because Cofidis has a maintenance to ensure.”With these famous points (UCI)I think my team is waiting for me to be there to score“, considers the recent winner of the Tour de l’Ain, who thus intends to avoid a trip to Australia to multiply the one-day races, in France and Italy.

Martin, who took the start of the Giro and the Tour de France this year, will not be at the start of the Vuelta on Friday in Utrecht. But he pocketed 60 UCI points on Sunday, finishing 4th in Polynormande – the equivalent of 15th place in the final classification of the Tour of Spain – and he continued this Tuesday with the Tour du Limousin. On the Spanish roads, Cofidis will rely in particular on Bryan Coquard to aim for a stage (100 points, 40 for 2nd), and consolidate his place in the hierarchy (15th). The northern team is 1,012 units ahead of Lotto Soudal, in the first “relegation” position.

De Lie, the 20-year-old machine goes on

Direction the WT for Quintana and Arkéa-Samsic?

Movistar (18th, 13,724 pts) has the Belgian formation in its wheel (19th, 13,224 pts). Israel-Premier Tech (20th, 12,986 pts) has not said its last word, while for TotalEnergies (21st, 9,030), the hope of climbing from second to first planetary level has withered. A performance that Arkéa-Samsic is about to achieve (14th, 14,626), who will rely during the Iberian test on Nairo Quintana, including the extension for three years was announced on Tuesday. The passage from the antechamber to the big leagues is understood, sportingly, for the Alpecin-Deceuninck of a certain Mathieu van der Poel (7th, 19,395).

BixeExchange – Jayco (16th, 14,121) and EF Education-EasyPost (17th, 13,895) will be two other teams to observe through the “points race” prism, for three weeks. The first named can aim for the jackpot with Simon Yates, winner of the Vuelta in 2018, which would bring (at least) 850 points to the structure that uses it by repeating the exploit. For Lotto Soudal and Movistar, the prospect of the coronation seems more distant, but the fight will be daily. For the prestige of a bouquet in the Grand Tour, above all, but also to look to the future serenely.
