So like that, the sedans would be in agony? Would customers no longer want daddy’s cars? The Peugeot 508, Renault Talisman and others volkswagen passat are shunned today and the genre is dead? And if the salvation of the good old three-boxes was in their SUVisation, in their large wheels of at least 20 inches?
It is in any case the option that is emerging among those who are experiencing some problems with their sedans of the moment. The Talisman is stopped? The Renault Arkana cardboard. The 508 is idling? The 408 has just been presented, and it’s also a sedan, no matter what. For its part, Volkswagen, which is throwing in the towel and will settle for a next generation of Passat in on break only, is also doing it again, with its ID Aero.
But why is it called Aero? For once, the name of a car is not intended to evoke any exoticism, but more pragmatically the CX of this car, rather perfect for a machine perched on 22-inch wheels, since it reaches 0.23. A success achieved thanks to the sedan lines, obviously, necessarily more fluid than those of the usual SUV vans. But this aerodynamics is also the result of a scrubbing of all the asperities,
A smooth roller at the service of aerodynamics
At the level of the front face, it does not have the aggressiveness of the large vertical calenders BMW style. Its design is closer to that of a Golf 8 than a Peugeot 308, for example. The profiles meanwhile, are not tortured and just underlined with a simple fold. Right up to the retracted door handles so as not to retain air. A fluidity of the lines which makes it possible to forget the immensity of the car of almost 5 m long (the exact dimensions are not yet known) and its wheelbase close to 3 m, the overhangs being reduced to the maximum.
This smooth line which prevents the machine from appearing too bulky, is also found in the treatment of the rear face, just as sober and smooth. The only fantasy: a bar of LEDs, fashionable at the time, crosses the car from side to side, up to the VW logo, lit up to remind you that we have just bought the German brand.
For the moment, the interior of the car is not fixed, but we can predict that it will be close to that of the ID4 and 5. Just like its mechanical part. And for good reason: the Aero adopts the same MEB platform as its friends. On the engine side, Volkswagen is content, for the moment, to announce a 77 kWh battery and a range of 620 km. This suggests that it will have, at least initially, the unique 204 hp engine like the ID5. Except that the latter only displays a range of 513 km.
The Aero and its famous aerodynamics will allow it to glean 100 km more? A matter to check during the first tests which should not take place immediately. Because, let’s remember, this version is only a concept car and even if it is close to the production car, a few small tricks, such as the lighted door handles, could well disappear. Intended initially for China, where it was designed and where it is manufactured, the Aero will then land in Europe and the United States, with a production unit dedicated to it in Germany in Emden in 2023.
