The visitor from the past

François Descraques willingly confesses this in a fascinating interview Point : despite the critical success of the web-series, which was able to find funding and gain momentum without losing its authenticity, it only encountered closed doors. There where Kaamelott: First part is the product of a large television license, his work remains on the fringes of the well-established system of French industry, having as a bonus the audacity to eye American science fiction, even the big post-apo in the terminator.
His relentlessness commands respect and immediately sets him apart from the films of opportunistic youtubers who have polluted multiplexes on rare occasions (you remember Not Very Normal Activities and The manor ? We neither). Descraques and his team seek less to capitalize on their quite relative celebrity than to decline and reorganize their universe to make it even more accessible, without however sacrificing its foundations. Namely the D system and the passion.
The Visitor from the Future is a web-series adapted for the big screen. Neither the technical invoice nor the actor’s direction are deceiving, nor the technical invoice nor the actor’s direction claim to be deceptive, to be more precise. From the appearance of the famous visitor, camped by a Florent Dorin as invested as usual, the feature film assumes its shift, contrary to the aesthetic academicism of the big productions of the moment. The film proudly brandishes its ambitions without ever claiming the false meticulousness of imitation American blockbusters, leaving its seams apparent, seams which in fact make it a success.
The sets betraying the limits of the budget and the very spontaneous acting of the actors, rather than weighing down the story, refer to the modesty, the touching inventiveness of the beginnings of YouTube, back when the platform and its economy had yet to bury its most talented creators under megatons of disembodied content. Yes, rest assured: the duo McFly and Carlito just acts as a compulsory cameo, the time of a scene which recalls with a touch of cynicism the evolutions of the medium.
Of course, the larger budget allowed the band to revise its ambitions upwards, whether in terms of production design or special effects. The film allows itself quite spectacular shots, which the series would never have dared to dream of. But he can boast of not having given up a form of puritya direct relationship with its audience that institutional feature films are unable to reach, no matter how many PAF icons are employed.
The Corridors of Time
This is why the avalanche of jokes and gags that dot its 104 minutes, sometimes random, draws smiles, even a few laughs (except for the Belgians, perhaps): the dynamic between Florent Morin, Raphaël Descraques, Slimane-Baptiste Berhoun, Mathieu Poggi and Lenie Cherino, dating from 2009 anyway, is very real. On the other hand, it will take more time to get used to the presence ofArnaud Ducret and Enya Barouxrepresentatives of a more conventional cinema, invited to create new challenges.
François Descraques certainly seeks to extend not the web-series, but the entire universe of Visitor from the Future since it also borrows heavily from the novel The pack. Nevertheless, it also intends to deliver family entertainment, universal, which will appeal to moviegoers of all stripes, whether or not they are familiar with the saga. Our heroes therefore meet Gilbert, a politician on the verge of making big mistakes, and Alice, an activist determined to stop him. The opportunity to recycle the famous formula “This is what will happen”which had started the series, on a much larger scale, while introducing a whole new narrative arc.
Their story acts as a red thread, a little unbalanced at the edges, which takes care to take the different protagonists to the various obligatory places, from the post-apo bar to the lair of the weather brigade, passing by the Burrow of the pack, with the pretext of an ecological theme that goes from pastiche (the first season) seriously, the 2020s oblige. An interesting idea, with coherence and subtlety nevertheless mistreated by the other imperatives of the scenario, a fortiori towards the end, which embraces the temporal paradoxes with less irony than in the series.
The balancing act casually quite risky in which the veterans of the fire Dailymotion engage (how does it still exist?) is therefore more than perilous. And they come out with honors, not without some difficulties. Not free from flaws, The visitor from the future should easily convince fans. It remains to be seen whether its undeniable qualities will affect the general public, who really need to be proven that we can invest in dark rooms without trying to do it upside down.
