For 11 days, this Brazilian fisherman in his forties was forced to survive without water or food in a modest freezer in the waters of the Atlantic.

UNUSUAL – A scenario halfway between Alone in the world and Indiana Jones 4. Indeed, like the famous adventurous archaeologist and the FedEx delivery man lost on an island, the fisherman Brazilian Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues was able to rely on an everyday object to survive in extreme conditions.

As reports the press brazilian Since the end of August, this Brazilian fisherman has lived a most unprecedented experience by surviving 11 days in a freezer in the middle of the Atlanticfollowing the loss of his boat.

Leaving the town of Oiapoque for three days of fishing on the Brazilian coast, Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues was quickly forced to improvise after spotting cracks in his boat wooden, as he explains himself to the RecordTV channel.

As his boat begins to sink in the Atlantic, the 44-year-old man is then forced to test the buoyancy of a freezer present on his boat. “When I saw that there was no way out, I took the freezer and left,” says the fisherman on the show Domingo Espetacular.

According to estimates by the Brazilian press, the man – who cannot swim – drifted for 11 days ending about 450 km from the place where his boat sank. Apart from the fear of encountering a shark, it was above all the water that worried Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues the most: ” Water started to seep into the freezer. And I scooped it out by hand. I started to despair “, he confides again.

Rescue and going behind bars

On August 11, a group of Surinamese fishermen spotted the makeshift boat in the distance and decided to approach it, discovering Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues inside, undernourished and thirsty. The latter estimates that he lost five kilos during this ordeal.

“Fisherman Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues spent 11 days adrift in a freezer in the middle of the Atlantic after his boat sank. The rescue was carried out by fishermen who found the device floating in the sea, off Suriname”.

Unfortunately for him, this rescue does not sign the end of his troubles. Once on land and after receiving first aid in Suriname, the fisherman was quickly arrested by the police. Without papers, he was then placed in a cell for 16 days in Paramaribo, the capital, without the slightest explanation on the reason for his his detention.

Finally extradited to Belém in northern Brazil after receiving several visits from the Brazilian authorities, Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues speaks of his return home as ” the most important day » of his life, without forgetting to mention his savior: « That freezer, to me, was God. A miracle “.
