Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama unveil their portraits which will hang on the walls of the White House on September 7, 2022.

UNITED STATES – Joe Biden is reviving a tradition abandoned by Donald Trump. This Wednesday, September 7, the president of United States invited Barrack and Michelle Obama to the White House for the ceremony unveiling their portraits which will be hung on the walls of the American presidential residence.

“I’m happy to be back”declared Barack Obama in front of the members of the administration. “I want to thank Sharon Sprung [qui a peint le portrait de Michelle Obama] for capturing everything I love about Michelle: her grace, her intelligence, and the fact that she’s hot”he continued to applause. “I want to thank Robert McCurdy [qui a fait son portrait] for having dealt with a much more difficult subject »he joked.

“When future generations walk down these halls and look at these portraits, I hope they really feel who Michelle and I were. I hope they leave with the deep certainty that if we could make it this far, maybe they can too.”underlined Barack Obama more seriously.

A role model for young people

His wife Michelle shared the same message. “If we can find ourselves together on the walls of the most famous address in the world…it’s so important for every young person who doubts themselves to believe that they can too”she said to the audience.

Artists Sharon Sprung and Robert McCurdy were specially chosen by the couple to create these two portraits. The paintings took between 12 and 18 months to complete.

If the Obamas were warmly welcomed by the Biden couple – Joe Biden was Barack Obama’s vice-president for eight years – it was in theory at donald trump to organize the event during his first mandate. The billionaire did not wish to continue the tradition.

The ceremony for Trump not yet fixed

It must be said that the animosity between the two men was great, Trump accusing Obama of having spied on him and expressing doubts about his place of birth. Obama himself was not interested in such an event with Trump, according to Business Insider.

This refusal on the part of Donald Trump was a first for 40 years. Usually, presidents of all political stripes would invite their predecessor to officially unveil the portraits. Barack Obama, for example, organized a ceremony for the Republican George W. Bush and his wife Laura in 2012, because “the presidency transcends differences”he justified at the time.

For the moment, no date has been announced for the portraits of Donald Trump and Melania. On Tuesday, the government spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre explained that the decision was up to the White House Historical Association, which “manages the process on the official portraits of presidents and their wives”. According CNNthe association would be “first steps” of the creation of the paintings for the Trump couple.
