The cultural industry will never cease to amaze us. The growing monster Embracer Group has just made new acquisitions, including renowned video game studios as well as a huge part of the Lord of the Rings rights. A titanic ascent.

When the ring changes fingers

Nice thunderclap today! Embracer Group is still hungry and after getting their hands on Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider) or Eidos Interactive (Deus Ex) from Square Enix, the Swedish giant announces a new acquisition and not just any: that of Middle-earth Enterprises, the company which quite simply deals with the rights of Lord of the Rings.

Embracer Group, (…) has entered into an agreement to acquire Middle-earth Enterprises, a division of The Saul Zaentz Company, which owns an extensive catalog of intellectual property and worldwide rights to films, video games, board games, merchandising, theme parks and stage productions related to iconic fantasy literary works The Lord of the Rings trilogy and JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit, as well as corresponding rights to other literary works related to Middle-earth (…) which have not yet been exploited.

Everything is written black on white in a official statement : the group which also owns THQ Nordic now has The Lord of the Rings franchise in its fold thanks to Middle-Earth Enterprises. This last company precisely owns the worldwide rights for film adaptations and all derivative products (including video games) and was simply called Tolkien Enterprises when it was created in 1978. And it is necessarily … huge.

Important precision : The rights to The Lord of the Rings books still belong to Saul Zaentz Companyan American company founded in 1976. Without that, the amount of the acquisition is not known.

Several video game companies also acquired

Because it’s definitely a very big day for Embracer Group, we learn that he also got his hands on several video game or technological entitiesthat is here :

  • Tripwire Interactive: an American company of publishing, development and distribution of video games founded in 2005. We owe him the games Red Orchestra, Killing Floor Where Maneater as well as the edition of Chivalry 2.
  • Limited Run Games: a video game publisher focused on the independent scene whose specialty is to release many independent or old-school titles in boxes, or with unpublished collector’s editions.
  • Tuxedo Labs: a Malmö, Sweden-based development studio behind the game Teardown.

The icing on the cake ? Embracer Group Announces Agreement to Acquire Another PC and Console Video Game Company and obviously, it would not be just any: “the purchase price of this undisclosed acquisition is among the third or fourth largest transactions”it says officially.

Just that. It is not yet known whether the firm is referring to its history or downright to the entire video game industry, but a big announcement should emerge soon.
