Summer Series – How is…Citroën?

La grande berline C5X brille par son confort, comme toute bonne Citroën. Pas de déclinaison électrique au programme, mais l

Citroën has always cultivated its uniqueness among general manufacturers, with products whose style and design are often out of the ordinary.

The first 50 copies of the Ami Buggy were sold out within minutes on the web.

The case of the AMI provides a perfect illustration of this: with more than 23,000 orders (including 13,300 in France) since its launch in April 2020, this electric quadricycle has enjoyed rather improbable success, and bears witness to this ” joy of being different » that Jacques Calvet, former boss of the PSA group, pointed out a few years ago.

In France, the brand occupies third place in a market where it accounted for 10.6% of new car registrations in the first half, behind Peugeot (16.9%) and Renault (18.4%).

Citroën sold 242,000 cars in Europe in the first half, a value down nearly 26% compared to 2021, while the market slowed by 14% in a context of shortage of electronic components which is slowing deliveries. The other generalist manufacturers show comparable underperformance, around -22% at Peugeot and VW, or 24% at Skoda.

The C3 (4th sale in France in the first half) and C3 Aircross (12th sale) are other important growth drivers, even if these cars are still overtaken by their respective rivals from Peugeot and Renault.

Another locomotive, the C5 Aircross which remains a safe bet on the market (more than 250,000 units sold since 2018 in all countries) and can count on its recent restyling to consolidate its success. A success which is partly based on its plug-in hybrid version developing 225 hp and capable of traveling around 55 km in electric mode.

Let’s also mention the C4, which represents the second best seller in its segment in France, slightly ahead of the VW Golf star in the first half. Note in passing that its electric version, called ë-C4, provides a quarter of the registrations in the range.

On the other hand, Citroën has definitively left the segment of mini-city cars, where it offered the C1 until the fall of 2021. The entry level is therefore now provided by the C3. We note in passing that Peugeot proceeded in the same way with its 108, which was the quasi-twin of the C1. Toyota, which offered an Aygo based on the same base, remains on the niche with its Aygo X. This is

Still, one can wonder about the positioning of the brand in the Stellantis galaxy, which posted record profits in the first semester. While Peugeot and Opel represent in Europe the ” premium access ” and that Fiat occupies the niche of popular cars, what future for the Chevrons, which are still far from the objective of one million cars per year (796,000 in 2021, it is true in the difficult context that we knows)?

The brand is notably attacking the Indian market, identified as a powerful engine of growth in terms of volumes, and to this end is developing less expensive and therefore less sophisticated models. These will not be intended to be sold in the EU, but contribute to a more accessible positioning.

However, Citroën does not intend to become the branch low cost of the group. He thus continues to develop top-of-the-range models, like the astonishing C5X. A large family car that borrows from the worlds of the sedan, station wagon, even SUV, and brilliantly assumes the brand’s innovative heritage. A detail that is not one, this new standard-bearer of French know-how is made…in China!
