Scientists have advanced the hour of the end of the world…

Les scientifiques ont avancé l’heure de la fin du monde...

At the beginning of the year, a group of atomic scientists determine how close the end of the world is. If in 2018 they brought it forward, in 2022, for the third time in a row, they maintained the time of what they call “Horloge de l’Apocalypse” or “Doomsday Clock” in English at 11:58 p.m. and 20 seconds. He … not rest so only 100 seconds before the extinction of humanity? Although it may vaguely remind you of some conspiracy theories, this study is serious. We tell you more in this article, starting with how to interpret the hours.

What is the Doomsday Clock?

The creation of the Apocalypse clock dates back to 1947. The tool was designed by the artist Martyl Langsdorf. Each year after its creation, the symbolic clock is updated by the editors of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. Undoubtedly traumatized by the greatest conflict of the last century, the artist wanted to represent the possibility of a nuclear attack.

That said, since 2007, the Doomsday Clock take into account other factors that constitute a danger to the survival of the human species. These include climate change, geopolitical conflicts, technological or scientific advances, not to mention the risk of natural disasters. In short, only things that could cause major damage to our common planet.

The Evolution of the Clock of the Apocalypse

As we said, the clock is updated every year, in the month of January. If the fateful hour is midnight, the clock can move forward or backward, depending on the dangers hanging over the Earth. As an example, when it was created, the Apocalypse clock indicated 11:53 p.m., or 7 minutes before the end of the world. However, in 1991, just after the Cold War, it showed 11:43 p.m., or 17 minutes before midnight.

Still, since then, many events have caused the needle to come dangerously close to noon. So in 2017, researchers estimated that Doomsday Clock read 11:57:30 p.m., or 2 minutes and 30 seconds before the end. In January 2018, the situation got even worse since the clock showed 11:58 p.m., that is to say only 2 minutes before the end of the world.

The Apocalypse Clock in 2022

At the start of the health crisis, in 2020, the Apocalypse clock showed 11:58 p.m. and 20 seconds. It was the same time as the year before. Where are we today? Well, in the same place. Thus, for the third consecutive time, the clock of the Apocalypse indicates 23:58 and 20 seconds. In other words, 100 seconds before the fateful hour.

Remember, scientists update the clock every January. The current conflict in Europe has therefore not yet been taken into account. That said, the fear of the escalation of the Kremlin was very present. In any case, scientists believe that the situation is serious.

On the nuclear issue, Iran’s decision is highly worrying. The country has indeed decided to accumulate uranium, necessary for the manufacture of the atomic bomb. For its part, China is also not to be outdone when it comes to the development of its military arsenal. We can notably cite the nuclear hypersonic missile. Without forgetting the threat of North Korea which also has nuclear weapons.

In addition to the threat of a full-scale nuclear attack, the challenges climatic conditions are also important. The establishment of the COP is also a step towards the fight against global warming. As a reminder, COP 26 was held in 2021. The fact is there, last year is one of the years that recorded the highest temperatures ever recorded. The Earth is therefore not out of business yet.

Is there still hope?

Given how the situation is presented, the doomsday clock sends a message of death and despair. However, this is not the philosophy of its creator, Martyl Langsdorf. For her, the clock symbolizes hope. hope because according her, this tool “transmitted the feeling that we can do something about it. We can roll it back.”

Moreover, we know what the present is made of. In this sense, the human being has the capacity to choose another less chaotic future. This with the help of scientists, but also the billions of people who live on our planet common to all. Everyone can do something.
