Retirement: here is the REAL cost of a place in a retirement home or nursing home!

Many people mistakenly confuse a retirement home (EHPA) and EHPAD. In fact, we say EHPA for accommodation establishment for the elderly and EHPAD for accommodation facility for the elderly dependent.

Arrived at a certain age, our elders are placed in centers for the retired. There, seniors will be less alone and better taken care of. As saying that it’s not free. Here are the average prices for a place in an EHPAD and a retirement home.

Why place seniors in a centre?

In some countries, sending older people to a retirement home may be viewed with suspicion. It is considered abandonment. However, this practice is widespread in other countries including France.

Indeed, in the large cities, everyone works. Early in the morning, the children go to school while mom and dad go to work. The grandfathers and grandmas stay in front of the TV. That said, having reached a certain age, grandfather and grandmother are obliged to reside in a center for the elderly.

This is because there is no one to take care of them at home. Nowadays, there are two kinds of centers for retirees, namely EHPAs and EHPADs. What is the point of this distinction? How to differentiate them?

Retirement home: EHPAD or EHPA?

Would you like your elders to discover life in a centre? You hesitate between an EHPAD and an EHPA. Here are some explanations that should help you make a choice.

The EHPA or establishment ofaccommodation for the elderly is a classic retirement home. This establishment generally welcomes the elderly who are still independent.

Most of the time, seniors choose to go and live in this kind of place so as not to feel alone. What’s more, in EHPADs, they can engage in activities and take advantage of certain events.

The EHPAD is, as the last letter of the acronym indicates, reserved for dependent people. In a word, it is a medicalized and more specific retirement home. This type of establishment welcomes seniors who have lost their autonomy.

So of course, the dependency levels are not always the same. It differs from person to person. To distinguish them, useful accommodation is the “GIR” (group iso-resources). This term is used to assess the resident’s autonomy.

For your information, there are six levels. Individuals classified in GIR 1 are the most dependent. GIR 6 is the lightest dependency level. Now that you know all that, all you have to do is make your choice. However, be prepared, as prices can vary a lot.

The average price of a retirement home

As you can imagine the classic retirement home pricess are less expensive than EHPADs. Nevertheless, on the market, prices vary a lot. For EHPAs, the rates for a resident range from 300 euros to 3,000 euros per month.

This large price difference is due to several factors. Mainly, it is the quality of the services which increases the prices. Locality also plays an important role in value. Those in major cities and capitals are often very expensive.

In short, if you want to opt for this or that retirement home, there are several different things that drive up the price. Here are a few:

  • Administrative costs relating to admission
  • Liaison documents with relatives
  • Accountability

Knowing all this, it seems normal that the prices go up. Indeed, a place in a EHPAD will cost you between 1,500 and 6,000 euros per month.
