Marcus Thuram, at his own pace / The Frenchman of the weekend / Borussia Mönchengladbach / SOFOOT.com

Three months before the World Cup in Qatar, every match counts for French internationals and potential members of Didier Deschamps’ list. And this weekend, it was Marcus Thuram (four selections) who stood out. After a failed season and a hectic summer, the 25-year-old striker is starting the 2022-2023 financial year on a high note: in four Bundesliga games, the former Guingamp has already scored as many goals as in 2021- 2022.

Besides the fact that they defend the colors of the same club, namely Borussia Mönchengladbach, what is the recent double point shared by Marcus Thuram and Yann Sommer? First, the two players were courted by OGC Nice and invited to show their talent in Ligue 1 this summer. Secondly, they represented the big players in their team’s big performance against Bayern Munich (who could only recover the point of the draw this Saturday, on the fourth day of the German championship): while the Swiss goalkeeper broke the save record in the Bundesliga with no less than eighteen saves (!), the striker hit the mark on the other side of the field by beating Manuel Neuer and giving the advantage to his team just before half-time on a poor recovery from his compatriot Dayot Upamecano. An achievement registered on one of the only opportunities of his clan, demonstrating his efficiency and his power at the start of the season, in addition to his interesting aerial presence (three duels won in the air, no one does better among his partners).

Thuram, goals and form

Since the resumption, the Frenchman has hurt the opposing defenses. Visibly revived after a summer when he was announced for a long time on the departure, Thuram has just planted three times in the space of four days (on the field of Bayern, therefore, on that of Schalke 04 and against Hoffenheim). That is the same number of net tremors as… over the entire 2021-2022 financial year! Without forgetting a decisive pass, addressed to Jonas Hofmann in Gelsenkirchen. Are we witnessing, therefore, the real awakening of the former Guingampais?

Because it must be said: if its leaders have left the door open to a transfer in recent weeks, it is mainly because of disappointing performances during the previous months. While he had shown promising things during the two years following his arrival across the Rhine (18 goals48 presences in the starting lineup), the one who has just blown his 25e candle dramatically slowed the pace with only 3 pawns and 1 assist (for 9 appointments). What to worry about the real level of the center forward, who has never exceeded the bar of 10 caramels since his first professional contract.

Troubled waters, is it over?

Finally, it would seem that it was the protagonist himself who made the decision: no signing for a team less posh than what he hopes for in the medium term, refusal addressed to the Aiglons and the ambitious Borussia to revive themselves. Right there where his spitting had been controversial in 2020and for which he had flatly apologized.

Not helped by his injury in August 2021 (torn ligaments in his right knee, which caused him to miss long weeks of competition), which had logically cooled Inter for a possible arrival at the same period, Thuram now seems to have digested his frustrations and left for a ride. With, in a corner of his head, the World Cup in December with the Blues. After all, wasn’t it when he distinguished himself with Mönchengladbach that Didier Deschamps called on him for the France team and offered him his four caps from 2020 to 2021?
