Justin Bieber performs on day three of Sziget Festival 2022 on August 12, 2022 in Budapest, Hungary.
MUSIC – The Justice World Tour surely won’t resume. Justin Bieber announced on Tuesday September 6 that he was interrupting his world tour for the second time, due to health problems. The Ramsay Hunt syndrome, from which he suffers, was already the cause of a cancellation of several concert dates planned in Canada last June.
The singer had returned to the stage in Europe and recently at the big Rock in Rio festival in Brazil. “This weekend, I gave everything for the Brazilians (but) when I left the stage I was exhausted and I realized that my health had to be a priority”, he wrote in an Instagram story. “ So I’m going to take a break from my tour, for now (…) It will be fine but I need to rest to feel better”continued the artist.
At the time, he revealed in a video posted on his Instagram account to have syndrome by Ramsay Hunt. “I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt syndrome, caused by a virus that attacks a nerve in my ear and in my face, causing facial paralysis”had revealed the artist.
Aware of disappointing many fans, the singer in a relationship with Hailey Baldwin had shown the symptoms caused by this rare disease. “As you can see, this eye is not blinking. I can’t smile from that side. This nostril does not move”explains Justin Bieber, as you can see in the video below.
Where does this syndrome come from?
On the portal for rare diseases and orphan drugs Orpha.netthis syndrome discovered in 1907 is defined as a “rare infectious disease characterized by auricular shingles associated with peripheral facial nerve palsy, often accompanied by other cranial nerve damage”.
Thereby, “Patients manifest a painful erythematous vesicular rash that affects the outer and inner part of the ear” and then find “facial paralysis on the same side”. In some cases, the disease can also cause hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and vomiting as well as nystagmus, which is an involuntary rhythmic oscillation of one or both eyes.
This form of facial paralysis, which can appear at any age, results from infection with chickenpox (or varicella zoster virus). After recovery from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the nerves until it is reactivated for reasons that are still obscure to medicine, but often occurs following intense stress, vitamin deficiency or reduced immune defences. Facial paralysis is usually transient but can also, in some cases, become permanent.
A disease far from incurable
“For those who are frustrated by the cancellations of my upcoming shows, I am simply not able to provide them. It’s pretty serious. Even though I had hoped it wasn’t.”. As Justin Bieber had indicated, it’s quite serious, but Ramsay Hunt syndrome can be treated.
In case of infection, it is therefore recommended to follow a treatment of antivirals in order to stem the spread of the virus in the body. In addition, it may also be recommended to use analgesics against pain.
Justin does not talk about the treatment he is undergoing in his video, but indicates doing exercises to gradually recover the motor skills of the right part of his face, as he explains in his Instagram video. Speech therapy is also recommended for patients with the syndrome to rehabilitate the affected orofacial or verbal functions. With serious and follow-up treatment, it could be cured within a few months at most.
Justin Bieber has in any case decided to once again put his career on hold for some time, without giving a resumption date for his concerts which were to be held until next March.
