This August 31, 2022 will mark the 25th anniversary of the death of Lady Diana, the princess of the hearts of the English. On this occasion, France 3 is broadcasting this Monday August 19, 2022 an issue of “Secrets d’histoire” dedicated to Diana Spencer. Because the former wife of Prince Charles retains, 15 years after his death, an aura of mystery that fascinates the general public, eager for the smallest detail of the life of this discreet woman. So discreet that she had preferred to hide her fame in order to be able to work quietly.
Diana Spencer made an impression by becoming one of the most popular princesses in the United Kingdom. Wife of Prince Charles, she was renowned for her benevolence and kindness, and it is not for nothing that she earned the nickname of “Princess of Hearts” from the English. Unfortunately, his last years of life were tragic. The mother of Princes William and Harry saw her marriage implode and herself revealed that her husband, the future king of England and son of Elizabeth II, was an unfaithful man. And, a few years later, she died in a terrible accident car crash that took place in Paris, as she tried to flee the paparazzi who were stalking her.

Lady Di, a woman who just wanted to be normal
This tragic end unfortunately symbolizes the relationship that Lady Diana maintained with the tabloid press throughout her life, since from an early age, it was followed and observed, even before starting to date the one who would become her husband. It must be said that it comes from a famous line of British aristocracy, whose origins date back to the 15th century. A family closely linked to the monarchy, since, through her father, Diana was a distant descendant of Charles II of England (in illegitimate descent) and, through him, of Henry IV, King of France, of Saint Louis and of Hugues Capet.
Far from seeking fame, young Diana Spencer loved sports and the arts, dreaming of becoming a ballet dancer. A bad student, she was “spotted” by the royal family thanks to her blue blood, her discretion, her gentleness and her modesty: perfect qualities for the wife of a future king. The marriage was arranged, everything was done to push Lady Di into the arms of her future husband, and the young woman found herself propelled into a celebrity she had never sought. The proof: before all that, she even concealed her identity to be able to work in peace.
She was an anonymous nanny
At the age of 18, Diana already bore the title of Lady Diana Spencer, thanks to her family, but she refused to use it. Rich, she didn’t need to work, and yet she decided to hide her roots to become the nanny of an American family. In an interview with the site Inside, Mary Robertson, her former employer, says she contacted a local nanny agency, which recommended the profile of young Diana to her. “I loved it,” she recalls. “She was wonderful with my son, Patrick.” The role of the future Princess of Wales? Playing with the little boy, doing the dishes and cleaning, all for $5 an hour. An activity which could seem unworthy of its rank for the purists, but which pleased the main interested party a lot.
Mary Robertson said it: she had no idea of the identity of her nurse, until the day she found a bank slip belonging to her employee under her sofa. “The slip said ‘Lady Diana Spencer’, and was for Coutts and Company bank. As I worked in finance, I knew it was the bank of the aristocracy and the royal family.” Confronted by the mother of the family, Lady Di simply explained that it was not very important, and resumed her work as if nothing had happened.
The paparazzi followed her to work
Unfortunately, Diana Spencer very quickly had to give up this work which was so close to her heart. At the same time, she began to dating prince charles, and becomes the target of the paparazzi. “One day, she warned me that reporters and photographers were at the end of our street, and that they were there because of her,” recalls Mary Robertson, who was then surprised to discover that her nanny was dating the son of the Queen of England, and that she was about to marry him.
But even after quitting, Diana stayed in touch with her former employer: “We wrote to each other regularly for 16 years, she came to visit. At the time, I didn’t realize that maybe it was a cry for help“, she regrets today, before specifying that Lady Di’s funeral was “the saddest and most painful moment” of her life.
