POLITICS – A demonstration between two debates. Several elected officials and members of Europe Écologie les Verts expressed their solidarity with the people uyghur by demonstrating within the Festival of Humanity. Present in the aisles to participate in the various events, debates and other conferences, this Saturday, September 10, these officials, like David Cormand, Julien Bayou or Marine Tondelier, went to the stand of the chinese communist party to make their voices heard.

“Uyghur solidarity” or “Free the Uyghurs”, could be read on their placards, as you can see belowin the video published by the EELV Twitter account and relayed by several party executives.

A symbolic action, in which some twenty people took part, organized a few days after the UN rendered a long-awaited report on the situation in the Chinese region of Xinjiang. The High Commissioner for Human Rights confirms “crimes against humanity” and reports on “credible evidence” torture and sexual violence against the Uyghur minority.

“It was essential to do so”

“It was essential”, to organize this action, we are told by the Greens. ” Today we can’t act as if we don’t know the situation of the Uyghur people in China “, explains to HuffPost Jean-Baptiste Pegeon, regional councilor for the Île-de-France region, the executive who coordinated the event. And to add: We have always been on the side of human rights with EELV, it is unthinkable not to be followed on this position. »

Schoolchildren regret obviously » the absence of discussions on this subject at the Fête de l’Humanité, where communist sections from all over France, and therefore, from China, rub shoulders. “ We should have organized at least a debate on the subject and invited the representatives of the Uyghur people,” says Jean-Baptiste Pegeon, “why not put the subject on the table? »

The report, published on September 1 by the UN, does not contain any revelations compared to what was already known about the situation in Xinjiang. On the other hand, the document brings the seal of the UN to the accusations leveled for a long time against the Chinese authorities.

For several years, the region has been the subject of intense surveillance: ubiquitous cameras, security gates in buildings, armed forces very visible in the streets, restrictions on the issuance of passports.

Western studies, based on interpretations of official documents, testimonies of alleged victims and statistical extrapolations, accuse Beijing of having interned in “fields” at least one million people, mostly Uyghurs, to perform sterilizations and abortions ” strengths “or to impose ” forced labor “. The UN does not corroborate this figure but notes “only a significant proportion” Uyghurs and Muslim minorities was interned.
