Cornet, Burel and Gasquet slip away in the third round, Nadal takes his revenge on Fognini... What to remember from Thursday

100% success for the French. The three engaged Thursday, September 1 at the US Open, Alizé Cornet, Clara Burel and Richard Gasquet, have climbed to the third round of the American Grand Slam. The latter will face Rafael Nadal, who despite the loss of a set and a racquet blow in the nose, won against Fabio Fognini. Carlos Alcaraz is continuing his career in New York, as are Marin Cilic, Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, who performed impeccably against American Sloane Stephens. In women’s doubles, the Williams sisters were eliminated in the first round.

Cornet avoids the trap Siniakova

The fight was tough but Alizé Cornet (40th in the world) overcame from the Czech Katerina Siniakova (6-1, 1-6, 6-3), in 2h03 of play. If the 83rd in the world gave the French a hard time, she was above all too irregular, dropping 44 unforced errors , the last of which on a match point for Cornet.

Holder of the record of 63 Grand Slam appearances in a row, the Niçoise, who has never exceeded the eighths final in New York, and who remained on an elimination from his entry into the running last year, will therefore try to match his best performance against the American Danielle Collins (19th).

Burel continues his American adventure

Clara Burel confirmed her feat in the first round where she beat the winner of the last Wimbledon Elena Rybakina, dismissing the Belgian Alison van Uytvanck (43rd) (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). With this victory, the 131st player in the world becomes the first French player from qualifying to reach a third round in the Grand Slam since Julie Coin, 14 years ago (US Open 2008). A tournament stadium that Burel achieved for the second time in her career, after Roland-Garros in 2020, and during which she will face Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, seeded number 6 and semi-finalist in 2021.

Gasquet surprises Kecmanovic

Richard Gasquet pulled out all the stops to dominate Miomir Kecmanovic, 36th player in the world, (6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4). The Biterrois again showed great fighting spirit to dismiss the Serb, relying in particular on his exceptional one-handed backhand.

If he had reached the last four at Flushing Meadows in 2013, Gasquet has not gone beyond the third round since 2018. The 36-year-old Frenchman will have to fight to reach the knockout stages, since his next opponent is called Rafael Nadal. The Mallorcan has always beaten Gasquet in seventeen confrontations on the main circuit. “Regardless of the past, it’s a chance for both of them to advance to the round of 16,” said the Frenchman’s pet peeve after qualifying.

Nadal a time stunned but qualified

Author of a catastrophic start to the match and despite a racket hit in the nose, Rafael Nadal, seeded number 2, overthrew the Italian Fabio Fognini in four sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6 -1). The Spaniard has erased the memory of the US Open 2015, during which Fognini had managed to come back two sets against him in Grand Slam to finally beat him. However, on Thursday, the 36-year-old Mallorcan was out for a set and a half until trailing 6-2, 4-2. Managing to correct the situation over the course of the meeting against the 60th player in the world, Nadal finally seemed to be heading for a quiet victory.

But an incident almost changed the course of the game to 3-0 in the fourth set: on a backhand extension, the Spaniard’s racket bounced off the ground, returning to his face. Half stunned, bleeding from the bridge of his nose, Nadal lay down, eyes closed, to get treatment on the court. If he took a few minutes to get back into the game, bandage on the nose, the world number 3 finally concluded the meeting in 2:38 of play.

Swiatek outclasses Stephens

number one Iga Swiatek found the efficiency which enabled him to line up 37 victories and six titles in a row in the spring. The Polish left no hope for the American Sloane Stephens, 51st in the world and winner in New York in 2017. She won 6-3, 6-2 in 1:14.

“I tried to keep the same motivation as when I play on the other courts. But it’s a dream to be there, on the court and not in the stands from where I watched Serena (Williams) play. and Karolina Pliskova when I was playing the tournament as a junior”, reacted Swiatek who played for the first time in his career in the huge arena of the Arthur-Ashe court. The Pole, who has never made it past the round of 16 at the US Open, will face in the next round another American, Lauren Davis (105th).

A solid Alcaraz dismisses Coria

World number 4 Carlos Alcaraz qualified without too much difficulty against Federico Coria. After a hung start, the Spaniard went 4-1 in the third set, before relaxing, which gave the Argentine hope for another outcome.

But Alcaraz rallied to find the third round and American Jenson Brooksby. In 2021, Alcaraz had reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament in New York for the first time. This year, the 19-year-old Spaniard returns in the costume of one of the main contenders for the title. In the rest of the men’s draw, Marin Cilic and Jannik Sinner also advanced to the third round.

Losing comeback of the Williams sisters

Invitational holders Serena Williams and her older sister Venus were eliminated in the first round of the women’s doubles tournament, beaten 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 by Czech pair Lucie Hradecka and Linda Nsokova . For their reunion in New York eight years later, the Williams sisters have not really found their automatisms, which had made them such a formidable duo with 14 Grand Slam titles at stake between 1999 and 2016, including two at Flushing Meadows. Serena Williams is however still involved in the women’s singles table, and will try to earn a place for the round of 16 against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (46th) on Friday.
