Behind the scenes of the wedding of Simon Porte Jacquemus and Marco Maestri

Dua Lipa swaying on “Voyage, voyage” by Desirless in a small village in the south of France? It happened on Saturday August 27, at the wedding of Simon Porte Jacquemus. The couturier-star married the man who has shared his life for five years, Marco Maestri, in Charleval (Bouches-du-Rhône), where he grew up. Paris Match was there.

At the village café, the social event that is preparing does not seem to disturb the tranquility of this hot day at the end of summer. A few old people are playing cards, and behind his counter the owner is wiping pastis glasses. Calmly. Like nothing ever happened. You have to go to the neighboring trade to measure the effervescence: at the hairdresser, the ladies in hair curlers are chattering. For good reason, this Saturday, the child prodigy is back home… and he’s just getting married! Simon Porte Jacquemus, star designer of his generation, marries the man he has loved for five years, Marco Maestri, founder of a communication agency. “We thought of this marriage with the heart, that’s why it takes place at my house, in my village”, confides the creator to us, a few hours before the ceremony.

If he now has his life in Paris, Simon Porte Jacquemus could not imagine organizing this big day anywhere other than on the land of his childhood, halfway between Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, in the town of Charleval, bordering de Mallemort, where he grew up. This South from which he dreamed so much of fleeing when he was a teenager has become, with time and maturity, his haven of peace, where he regularly returns to draw inspiration. Since its remarkable debut at Paris Fashion Week in 2013, its collections have taken shape like so many images of Epinal and its fashion shows take place, most often, outside the capital, in a lavender field or a salt marsh in the Camargue. So, it could not be otherwise for his marriage.

The town hall square in Charleval has everything from a postcard, with its small church, its stone benches and its central fountain, from which clear water flows. At the top of the double staircase of the town hall, Yves Wight, city councilor of this commune of 2730 inhabitants, observes the strange ballet which is being played. Simon Porte Jacquemus did not want to get married inside the common house, as is customary, but outside, under the August sun. Wooden chairs have been unfolded on the cobblestones, olive branches planted in their backs, and bouquets of sunflowers finish decorating the place.

If the couturier said he wanted an intimate ceremony, it was missed… Several press titles, national and international, were finally invited, and the onlookers, who came in large numbers, were only held back by thin security barriers. Around the square, on the balconies and at the windows, the local residents, like the paparazzi, have a ringside seat, so as not to miss anything of this sophisticated spectacle, which is not often used in the region.

Laetitia Casta fails

Among the crowd of onlookers, a few elderly ladies remember this little boy whom they saw grow up and become famous. He is “the one who succeeded”, they enthuse. Sometimes they still meet him in the village, when he visits his beloved grandmother, Liline, who has never left the hamlet of Bramejean, and her brother, Félix, who owns a house next door. He is a landscaper, and has also landscaped the gardens of the Château de Charleval, bought four years ago for a pittance by Daniel Rocher, the son of Yves Rocher, magical decor for the arrival of the VIPs at the ceremony. . Everything has been thought out to make the moment unforgettable.

Young people, who follow Jacquemus on Instagram, came to attend a parade of stars. The guest list has been kept secret until the last minute, so it’s ready for any fantasy. Some think they see the Marseille rapper Jul arrive, while others dream of a surprise arrival from Kim Kardashian or Rihanna. If the Barbadian singer has often been seen dressed in Jacquemus from head to toe, we are told that on this particular day, it was not even a question of sending her an invitation. Fans can console themselves with another popstar who made the trip: the British Dua Lipa , sculptural in a white dress, all in transparency, from the fall-winter 2022-2023 collection of the fashion house. The 200 or so guests, celebrities or not, were dressed by Simon himself, like the entrepreneur Jeanne Damas, the influencer Lamia Lagha, the journalist Loïc Prigent, the model Mica Arganaraz, or the designer Amina Muaddi and his companion comedian Fary.

Model Tina Kunakey arrives on the arm of her best friend, Victor Santiago, since her husband, Vincent Cassel, had an impediment. All marriages have their share of unforeseen events: thus, Laetitia Casta, expected until the last moment, will finally fail. When the rapper Damso gets out of his black van, it’s a rush on the side of the youngest. Especially since he holds the hand of the model Didi Stone and thus reveals, in the eyes of the world, their idyll. What if he was the real star of the day? Or Louis Savary, Simon’s cousin, known on social networks under the pseudonym “Loulou Ferrary”, who, in front of photographers, apes the approach of top models?

“When is the bride coming? “, impatient a passer-by, visibly uninformed. Because here is the lucky winner, Marco Maestri, who tumbles at the wheel of a vintage car, matching his beige suit, alongside his mother. The future groom ensures the spectacle and greets the assembly by making several bows.

Finally, Simon Porte Jacquemus enters, elegant in a dark blue suit, accompanied by his grandmother, this woman who gave him so much and raised him after the death of his mother, in a car accident, in 2008 The stylist can’t hold back his tears as he walks up the aisle that leads him to Marco, the man of his life. Between them, it has always been obvious. They met in 2018, thanks to rugby player Yoann Maestri, Marco’s brother, whom Simon had made the face of his first “Jacquemus man” campaign. “Yoann told me about Marco, I said to myself that I had to meet him, remembers the couturier. The same evening, on my way back from Marseille, I wrote to him “do you want to have dinner with me? “. And he accepted. “A “spontaneous, very natural” love at first sight: “We immediately moved in together and we never left each other. »

A few months ago, during a birthday party that Simon had organized for Marco’s 30th birthday, the latter surprises him by asking for his hand, under the amazed gaze of their families and friends. “When you are gay, there is a meaning in being able to get married and have the same rights as the others, they explain to us. There are still many debates today about the rights of gay couples. So it’s important for us to send a positive message on the subject. »

At the time of the exchange of consents, Simon’s “yes, I want it” is full of emotions. Marco’s is more assured: “Oh yes! he replies in a deep voice, making the whole assembly laugh. Then resounds the tube of Raffaella Carrà, “A far l’amore comincia tu”. A few kisses, then the lovers leave behind the wheel of their convertible. The festivities continue away from prying eyes, outside the village, on a long path of plane trees that leads to the Château de Bonneval. Where, as a child, the couturier photographed his first models – friends or dolls – which he disguised. If Simon Porte Jacquemus admits to having long dreamed of Lady Di’s wedding, his is not princely. He was rather inspired by that of “The Murderous Summer” by Jean Becker, his favorite film: “A few tables, a garland and people dancing”, he explains to us. The music will buzz until the end of the night. And we will even see Dua Lipa wiggle her hips on “Voyage, voyage” by Desireless. Like what, everything happens in Charleval…
